Beyond a Steel Sky gets new story trailer

Beyond a Steel Sky, which we’ve recently previewed, is a follow-up to the 1994 point-and-click adventure Beneath a Steel Sky. The first game might be a distant memory to some. But many have anticipated the next chapter in Robert Foster’s story — 26 years in the making. Revolution Software unveiled the project back in 2019 with a trailer, showcasing a newfound Union City where the game’s story takes place. Today, the developer dropped another trailer, and this one all about the story.

Back to the city

Robert Foster is all too familiar with Union City. He managed to escape it once, along with its polarization of wealth among its inhabitants. Now, he finds himself returning to it in the Beyond a Steel Sky story trailer.

It’s a wonder what lies in store this go-around, as the first game featured more than 100 different locations. This was made possible by comic book artist Dave Gibbons (DC Comics, Watchmen). The sequel brings Foster back to Union City, uniting him with some familiar faces. But there are still questions surrounding the scope of the sequel.

Scale and scope

As it reads on the Beyond a Steel Sky official site, the team at Revolution Software aims “to bring you our latest and most ambitious adventure to date.” And the gameplay trailer shows a bustlin’ city full of both friends and foes. The original trailer — released back in August — notes that the footage is from early alpha gameplay. This story trailer does not include this note, and suggests that development is moving along at a good pace.

Beyond a Steel Sky currently does not have a release date at this time. However, you can find it listed over at Steam. And if you’re looking to see what all the fuss is about from the depths of 1994, then you can pick up the original for free on GOG.
