Is that a relevant reference anymore? Meh- either way, that’s what Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has raked in over its first fifteen days on the market.
The second entry in the Black Ops series of Call of Duty titles is proving to be anything but covert in the sales and popularity department, That’s a fact that must make Activision and developer Treyarch very happy indeed.
With just a little over two weeks on store shelves, the military shooter has made a stunning billion dollars (USD) in worldwide sales. Just to put that in a little bit of perspective for you, it took Avatar two more days to reach the billion dollar plateau than it took for Black Ops 2. Even with the difference in price tag from a movie ticket to a game, that’s pretty impressive.
“The release of Call of Duty® has been one of the most significant entertainment events of each of the last six years,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “Since Call of Duty was launched, cumulative franchise revenues from players around the world are greater than current worldwide box office receipts to date for the top-10 grossing films of 2012 combined. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Star Wars,’ the two most successful movie franchises of all time.”
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is available now for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, and PC. There’s also a version of the game available for the PS Vita for portable gamers.
