Writer Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Universe is waking up over at DC Comics. The books are set to arrive this fall, and the publisher has just made the artistic team official.
A waking dream
When last we saw Sandman, it was in DC’s Metal crossover, and he was alongside the likes of Batman and Superman. It’s still unclear whether or not that will play into this version of the character. Or, for that matter, if this is all even taking place in the DC Multiverse. It could easily be its own thing really.
But if that’s the case, or it isn’t, we do know that DC’s Sandman Universe is going to be a pretty good looking stable of books. The publisher has just released the list of artists tapped for the four series’ that’ll make up the line, and they’re a mix of names you know, and some you probably don’t. This include Bilquis Evely, Dominike “Domo” Stanton, Max Fiumara, Sebastian Fiumara, and Tom Fowler.

- THE DREAMING—written by Si Spurrier with art by Bilquis Evely
- HOUSE OF WHISPERS—written by Nalo Hopkinson with art by Dominike “Domo” Stanton
- LUCIFER—written by Dan Watters with art by Max Fiumara and Sebastian Fiumara
- BOOKS OF MAGIC—written by Kat Howard with art by Tom Fowler
As for publication dates, those are out now as well. The one-shot Sandman Universe #1 will lead off for the line in August. Then in September, it’ll be joined by The Dreaming #1 and House of Whispers #1. After that, October will bring first issues of Lucifer and Books of Magic to round out the initial lineup of ongoings.
All in all, there’s a lot to like there for Gaiman fans. And it’s good to see DC pushing a line that’s not superhero themed, but instead mystical and probably a little more “out there”. As I mentioned too, this all could be a part of the Multiverse, which would open things up to even more stories. Though hopefully anything like that would be a little further down the line.
