Doom Eternal updates coming soon, director says the series could expand

Doom Eternal‘s second DLC, The Ancient Gods – Part Two, launched on March 18. The DLC marked the end of The Doom Slayer’s saga — for now. According to Doom Eternal‘s director, Hugo Martin, there’s still plenty that can be done with the Doom series. Doom Eternal hasn’t even reached its end, as more updates to the game will apparently come soon enough.

Martin spoke to Polygon about the future of the Doom series, noting that “there are more stories to tell with the Doom Slayer.” The current story began in 2016 with Doom, a reboot of the original 1993 video game, and continued with 2020’s Doom Eternal. The two-part DLC marked the climactic end to the reboot series’ events. “We planted a lot of stakes in the ground with that story,” Martin said. “And we’ve been able to flesh out a lot of those things throughout the course of [Doom Eternal] and to do two DLCs.” So, those stakes could make way for more installments.

The Doom series has changed quite a bit since its original release. What started as a franchise centered solely around killing off demons at every corner has become a detailed story — though, equally as demon-heavy. Martin recognized these changes, but said that the new formula in Doom Eternal seemed to work much better than the rest of the franchise, and this formula would likely stay in future installments.

As for where the stories will go, that’s undecided so far. However, Martin said that players will see “lots of hints” about what the series could turn into as they complete the DLC. “Again, our hero is somewhat timeless — I mean, literally, he’s immortal. So we could tell all kinds of stories,” he said.

Doom Eternal updates to come

The far future of the Doom franchise is unclear, but for now, at least we know that there’s more to come in Doom Eternal. Developer id Software shared a video on Twitter in which Martin and Doom Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton thanked fans for the success of the DLC release. At the end of the clip, Stratton teased that there’s “more Doom Eternal updates coming later this year.” The slaying doesn’t stop.
