Ghostbusters Afterlife has its first trailer. The movie somehow manages to be almost completely different, yet hauntingly familiar.
Passing the torch
When it was announced that original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman’s son Jason would be restarting the classic GB series, there was quite a bit of celebration amongst the fanbase. There was little reason not to be happy about it, honestly.
After the disastrous hard-reboot that Ghostbusters 2016 was, a return to the original universe was a necessity. From the first trailer released today though, it looks like we’ll still be getting something very different than the series has presented before.
But before you queue up the ‘here we go again’ comments, consider a few things. For starters, the time for a movie with the original cast in starring roles is long gone. Egon actor Harold Ramis passed away some time ago, and the remaining trio is up there in years. A little too up there to anchor a GB film.
So a passing of the torch is necessary at this point. Heck, it was necessary in 2016. I still think that if Sony had made that movie take place within the original universe, it’d have been received much better. Speaking of Egon too, he’s very much here in this trailer… in sprit.
It appears, as of now anyway, that the new film is basically about him and his remaining family. It’s got a serious Spielbergian feel to it, and harkens back to the originals in a few big ways. At the same time though, the shift in setting radically changes the overall picture of what “Ghostbusters” is.
