Gamescom: Mario Kart 8 gameplay

Mario Kart 8 may be a long way away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a taste of things to come before the inevitable release.

The first thing you notice when watching the players tour the ghost mansion is how the courses twist and turn in many different directions. The gravity mechanics really work towards this game’s advantage, as it allows for amazing course designs, and gives quite a bit of leg room for the developers. One player was using Mario in a regular kart, while the other was Toad on a motorcycle. What’s nice is that the camera angle changes with the vehicle as it hugs the walls of the mansion, giving you a sense that you really are defying gravity while racing.

The course also takes you under water, still utilizing the gravity mechanics as you can see other racers upside down above you on diverging track. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this really is a nod to F-Zero with the way it plays. To top it all off it’s F-Zero with items and Mario characters. What you will also notice is the player using the gyro controls as he tilts the Wii U gamepad to steer. So far Mario Kart 8 is looking very promising with its innovative and insane course designs. We’ll see how it all unfolds in the next few months as Nintendo unveils more details regarding this title. Mario Kart 8 will be launching Spring 2014 on the Wii U.
