Alohomora is a spell in Hogwarts Legacy. Unlike other skills that you need to equip and swap, it’s a built-in function and a core mechanic, though it comes mid-way through the campaign. Here’s our Hogwarts Legacy guide to help you get Alohomora to unlock doors in the game.

Hogwarts Legacy guide – How to get Alohomora to unlock doors and chests
Learning the Alohomora spell
The Hogwarts Legacy Alohomora spell can unlock doors and chests, but you do need to progress further in the campaign. Basically, you’ll need to complete the Percival Rackham’s Trial quest, which will make several tasks available. One of these is called The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament, where you have to talk to Gladwin Moon. You’ll find him chilling next to the Grand Staircase Puzzle.
He’ll then talk to you about Demiguise Statues, and there’s one right next to him. Basically, he wants you to collect items called Demiguise Moons from these statues. However, you can only pick them up at night. If it’s already daytime, then you won’t be able to do anything with them at all.
Moreover, because some of these objects are behind locked doors, he’ll teach you Alohomora. Trace the pattern and you’ll receive the Hogwarts Legacy Alohomora spell, which is perfect for hunting those Demiguise Statues and Demiguise Moons.
So, how exactly do you use the Hogwarts Legacy Alohomora spell to unlock doors and chests? Well, it’s fairly simple, but the game does a terrible job explaining it. Here’s the gist:
- There are two dials/sparks: red (inner) and green (outer).
- Red/inner dial can be rotated using the A and D keys.
- Green/outer dial can be rotated using the Q and E keys.
- The goal is to rotate one dial at a time until you see their respective gears start spinning. That means finding the sweet spot.
- Once both gears are spinning, the door or chest will magically unlock.
Here’s the kicker, the Alohomora you receive will only work on level 1 doors and chests. To upgrade the function, you need to collect the Demiguise Moons.
Gladwin already showed you one Demiguise Statue earlier as a freebie. Two more can be found in the Faculty Wing as part of the quest. It’s a stealth section, too, so try not to get caught. When you’re done with the objectives, you can collect the other Demiguise Statues/Demiguise Moons are elsewhere in the game world.
Hogwarts Legacy is available via Steam.
