Just last September, Offworld Industries finally launched its tactical first-person shooter Squad out of Early Access. It took five years of hard work and community feedback, but it was finally time to hit the big stage. Squad is an interesting blend, combining the best parts of arcade shooters and military simulations. The game features 100-player battles, combined arms combat, a world-class VoIP system, and base building. Following the big 1.0 update, Squad is now ready to roll out the substantial 2.0 update.
First up, the update adds the new map, Goose Bay, replacing Nanisivik. Goose Bay provides players with an immersive, polar battlefield offering intense vehicular and infantry gameplay. That should give you more of a new experience.
The V2.0 update for Squad also includes plenty of system optimization. All maps and layers will now load faster, and players can no longer take advantage of graphical options to get the edge on others. The new rendering features offer a higher overall fidelity as well.
Offworld Industries has also gone to town with network optimization for vehicles with closed turrets, as well as helicopters. Movement should be smoother, and things should look much better overall. Overall performance has also been improved with a long list of optimizations.
A new war
As for gameplay features and changes, the 2.0 update for Squad is no slouch. The Hesco Accommodation Bunker (HAB) is getting a new feature in the form of an Activation Delay timer. This will hopefully change spawn dynamics around HABs. Players will be rewarded for more planning and no longer be able to teleport across the map with new HABs. Opponents will have more time to react as well.
Helicopter flight in Squad is getting better too, with a more realistic and smoother experience awaiting pilots. Flight handling should also feel more natural and consistent thanks to the new calculations. The developer made alterations to refund mechanics, some quality of life changes, as well as tweaks to body dragging and more.
Arms of war
The 2.0 update bring new weapons to Squad so you have more of an arsenal to choose from. Infantry will get access to the new Mosin Nagant, the RPD Light Machine Gun, the RPG28, and GB NLAW Heavy Anti-Tank weapons, as well as the C7A2 and C8A3 rifles.
Vehicles are not getting overlooked, of course. Players can look forward to driving the newly added INS Modern Technicals, the GB FV107 Recon Vehicle, GB LPPV Armored Jeep, GB FV520UA CTAS IFV, and the GB SA330 Transport Helicopter.
Both vehicles and infantry get their own set of updates and bug fixes.
The user interface in Squad gets some tweaks thanks to update 2.0. All maps now have new loading screen images. Picking servers should be an easier affair for players now, as the updated server browser now shows show currently loaded Factions, Unit Types (Combined Arms until until the addition of new types and Generic Layers), and time since match start. Your favorites should also save properly now.
In the game, environments are going to look more realistic, while collision for a variety of situations has been fixed. As one would expect, the new update also brings a host of bug fixes.
If you have not tried out the insane battles in Squad just yet, now is a perfect time to do so, especially if Offworld Industries continue to support the game.
