So this one’s kind of interesting, considering what’s promised in the Kickstarter campaign, but Shenmue 3 on the PS4 might not be getting a physical release.
It’s the end of a trilogy that’s been ages in the making, and a game who’s announcement was one of the biggest moments at this past E3 (despite all the grousing about Kickstarter), but it looks like you might not be able to display a boxed edition of Shenmue 3 on your shelf of glory next to those Dreamcast cases. Well, most of you might not be able to anyway.
Developer Ys Net, as quoted by gaming site VG247, has gone on the record as saying that the game is actually “unconfirmed” as of right now for a retail launch. This comes as a surprise to me, since I had kind of assumed that a game of this magnitude would be getting the full-on launch fanfare, and not just be relegated to a PSN release. Then again, it does kind of fit into the thought pattern that Sony seems to have had about the game since the big show last month.
Remember that, instead of simply green lighting its development, the publisher took to Kickstarter to garner public funding. I think the thought there kind of was ‘is there a big enough audience for it to warrant a launch at all?’
As of now, it certainly seems as though there is since the game’s Kickstarter total sits at well over the original $2 million USD goal and is in excess of $5 million. That’s way short of the stretch goal of $11 mil, but still mighty impressive. As of now too, there are 33 hours left in the campaign, and pledging $60 before the campaign comes to a close seems the only way to assure yourself of a boxed, disc-based copy of the game, since that’s one of the actual rewards for backing it.
So if that matters to you (and not that I’ll be pledging, but it does to me), then you’d best get over to the Kickstarter page and pony up. Otherwise, it’s possible that you might find your physical Shenmue collection somewhat lacking, even after the final game launches for the PS4.
