A new game from Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds is set to be revealed during Gamescom 2022 later this month. The news was revealed by Geoff “Funky Shoes” Keighley earlier today in a Twitter post. Unknown Worlds then followed up, confirming it’ll be at the show with a turn-based, sci fi strategy game in tow.
What’s important about the announcement is that the game is not the one set in the Subnautica universe. Instead, Keighley reports it will be a “brand new sci-fi IP” from the team. In other words, the reveal will most likely be about the mysterious ‘Project M,’ which the studio has been working on for some time.
Unknown Worlds is apparently working on two games: Project M, and another in the Subnautica world. In February, our sister-site The Escapist published an interview with the Subnautica lead, David Kalina. In the interview, Kalina said the new game from Unknown Worlds is something “totally different” that what made the studio a star. The game will include a “‘Easy-to-learn, Hard-to-Master’ formula, aiming to be a game that is fun to watch others play.” At the time, Unknown Worlds was planning on the game to enter Early Access this year.
This is a brand new sci-fi IP, and we’ll show you lots of gameplay too!
Tune in live on August 23 at 8pm CEST / 2p ET / 11a PT for the announcement. pic.twitter.com/uxMAcGR5hJ

The new game from Unknown Worlds will get known during Gamescom
Unknown Worlds will unveil the game during Gamescom Opening Night Live. The event begins on August 23 at 2 PM ET and spearheads Gamescom 2022, which runs until Sunday, August 28. That’s right, just when you thought E3 (or not-E3) season was over.
The developer is also working on a game in the Subnautica universe, as mentioned earlier. We know far less about this one than Project M. However, the studio was seeking a senior narrative designer back in April, so it’s for sure still early in production. I expect the new IP will be well out of Early Access before Unknown Worlds drops something new. But, who knows? The developer certainly must be in a good place. Subnautica is one of the most successful indie survival games of recent years and catapulted Unknown into new heights. We’ll see what the team has planned for us on August 23.
