The history of Chris Redfield part three: Tragedy and hope

In part two of The history of Chris Redfield we covered his escapades from Resident Evil 5, all the way up to the start of Resident Evil 6. Saying that Resident Evil 6 is a divisive entry in the series would be putting it mildly. But Chris did play a big part in it, and it did have some significant story repercussions that are important to understand before playing Resident Evil Village.

To get the full picture, we must go back to Christmas Eve in 2012 when Chris, Piers, and a small group of BSAA agents are on a new mission. They are going to Edonia, a small country in Eastern Europe. Their mission is to quell a civil war that has raged out of control due to the use of bioweapons. While there, Chris and Piers encounter Sherry Birkin, who Chris’s sister Claire saved during the events of Resident Evil 2. She is now a member of the Division of Security Operations, an anti-bioterrorism group that Leon also works for. Sherry is protecting an Edonian mercenary named Jake Muller, who, unbeknownst to Chris, is the illegitimate son of Wesker. Check out part one and two of the history of Chris Redfield for more info on the relationship between those two.

Chris then encounters a woman in a blue dress who says she is Ada Wong. She tells Chris that these new bioweapons were created by the C-Virus. She also says that the virus was supplied by a group called Neo Umbrella. Chris is suspicious, but agrees to help her escape regardless. However Ada traps Chris and Piers in a room with their other squadmates and releases a bomb filled with needles full of the C-Virus. Chris and Piers fight their transformed comrades, but Chris is seriously injured in the fight. After escaping City Hall, Piers bring Chris to a nearby hospital to recover.

Chris gets emo

Chris eventually awakens in the hospital, but suffers from amnesia as a result of his injuries. Before the BSAA can check on him, Chris escapes the hospital. Over a year later in 2013, Chris is a shell of his former self. Piers finally tracks down and confronts him at a local bar to try and jog his memory. Chris recognizes the BSAA logo on Piers’ jacket, but not much else.

Piers brings Chris back into active duty with the BSAA, despite him not having his memory back. The two are sent to Waiyip in the Chinese province of Lanshiang, which is under attack by Neo Umbrella. Their mission is to save some UN members being held hostage by local bioterrorists. Chris and Piers manage to complete their mission and narrowly escape an air strike of the area. Upon seeing the same group of infected that his teammates turned into in Edonia, Chris finally regains his memory and vows to get revenge on “Ada.”

Chris’ team is then attacked by an invisible monster, but Chris manages to kill it. Ada then shows up again to infect one of Chris’ teammates with the C-Virus. Sadly, Chris and Piers must once again kill a mutated friend. Chris and Piers then track Ada down to a warehouse where they encounter Leon S. Kennedy and Helena Harper.

History of Chris Redfield

No, I am not going to explain Ada

Leon stops Chris from shooting Ada, as they need her alive as a witness. Leon explains that the true mastermind is the national security adviser Derek Simmons. Simmons launched a bioweapon attack in a city called Town Oaks in America. Over 70,000 died in the attack, including the President, and Ada is wanted for questioning. Chris refuses to spare her though, and a fight breaks out between Leon and Chris. Ada manages to escape during their fight, and Chris finally comes to his senses after talking to Leon.

Leon and Helena go after Simmons while Chris and Piers continue after Ada. Chris manages to corner Ada where she reveals that her plan is to use the C-Virus to recreate the incident at Raccoon City on a global scale. Then one of Simmons’ henchmen arrives in a helicopter and shoots Ada before she can say more. She leaves behind a briefcase with a syringe full of the enhanced C-Virus. Don’t worry, that wasn’t actually Ada. But that is a long, stupid story for another day. This is the history of Chris Redfield after all, not the history of “Ada Wong.”

Chris and Piers then try to stop a ship from shooting a gas bomb full of the C-Virus onto the mainland. They fail and most of the city’s population turns into zombies. Chris is then contacted by Leon who says they need to rescue Sherry and Jake from an underwater Neo Umbrella prison. It is there that Chris learns Jake has antibodies to the C-Virus, and is also Wesker’s son.

Family ties

On their way to the facility, Chris tells Piers that after the mission he is going to retire from active duty and pass his position on to him. After rescuing them, Chris reveals that he was the one who killed Jake’s father. The team are then attacked by a super bioweapon named HAOS. HAOS was designed by Neo Umbrella to spread the C-Virus around the world once it was fully completed. Piers became infected during the battle, and sacrifices himself so Chris could escape while taking down HAOS, along with himself and the entire facility. Chris decides not to retire after the mission, in memory of Piers.

The history of Chris Redfield now moves onto the CG movie Resident Evil: Vendetta. It is 2014, and Chris is sent to Mexico to oversee a sting against a bioweapons arms dealer named Glenn Arias. The sting goes completely sideways, and Arias reveals he has his hands on a new, unknown virus. Glenn escapes, and the rest of Chris’ team is killed. Swearing revenge against Arias, the hunt leads Chris to New York where an outbreak is underway. While there, he rescues Rebecca Chambers, who tells Chris this new virus is related to the one used by the Los Iluminados. That’s the same cult from Resident Evil 4. The two then decide to go to Leon in Colorado for help.

Chris hits the big apple

After finding Leon, the group is attacked by Arias’ goons. Rebecca is kidnapped, and Leon agrees to help Chris. Arriving back in New York, Arias taunts Chris by telling him that he has infected Rebecca with his new A-Virus. Later, Chris is able to find Arias’ lab and rescue Rebecca. There, Arias and Chris fight hand-to-hand and Chris defeats Arias. The arc isn’t finished though. He still needs to find a vaccine for Rebecca.

However, Arias’ right hand man, Diego Gomez, arrives before Arias dies and uses the A-Virus to combine and transform into a Tyrant-like creature. Chris and Leon are able to defeat the creature together, detonating a grenade in the creature’s heart. The group then finds the vaccine. Rebecca, along with all the infected in New York, are able to be cured.

Finally the history of Chris Redfield catches up to the most recent game in the series before Resident Evil Village. The next event takes place in the Resident Evil 7 DLC chapter titled Not a Hero. It is now 2017 and the BSAA is asked by the supposedly reformed Blue Umbrella to help with an operation in Dulvey, Louisiana. Chris hesitantly accepts the mission. Their goal is to apprehend Lucas Baker, who is believed to be in possession of the bioweapon known as “Mold.” Chris and his team arrive just at the end of the events of Resident Evil 7, when Ethan is fighting the fully-mutated Eveline. With Chris’ help, Ethan is able to defeat her. He then escapes with his wife Mia via helicopter.

Enter Ethan Winters

Chris pursues Lucas into a nearby salt mine. During the fight, Lucas turns into a giant monster. After Chris kills Lucas, he destroys all of his hard drives to prevent the sale of the Mold bioweapon. Chris also shows up during the end of the End of Zoe DLC where he finds Zoe and Joe Baker after they’ve defeated the Swamp Man. Chris went to find Zoe at the request of Ethan, as Zoe helped him and Mia escape the Baker mansion.

It has been a long and winding road, but we have finally caught up with the History of Chris Redfield. We know that Chris is once again involved in Ethan’s life in Resident Evil Village. But to what capacity we do not know. Based on the trailers Ethan seems to think that Chris has killed Mia. I strongly doubt that is the case though. We will find out what awaits Chris next in Resident Evil Village, and you can check out our review if you’re curious how it is.
