It’s been a while since the world of Torchlight appeared on gamers’ screens. But the series is poised to make a comeback that’s kind of MMO-ish.
Light the way
Looks pretty neat honestly, though I’m not so sure about those online components. I loved the old school Torchlight just fine the way it was. Still, I guess if you want to shake up the formula, this is as good a way as any.
And apparently, it’s been in the plans all along:
“Perfect World Entertainment has had a strong working relationship with Max Schaefer, dating back to the original Torchlight game, and we believe in his vision to evolve the Torchlight series,” said Yoon Im, senior vice president of publishing at Perfect World Entertainment. “Max has put together an all-star team of developers, and we continue to be amazed by the sheer level of talent and wealth of experience that they bring to Torchlight Frontiers. We’re proud to have Echtra Games as a part of the company.”
“Evolving the Torchlight universe into a shared world has always been a goal for the franchise, and I’m excited that we’re finally able to make it a reality,” said Max Schaefer, CEO of Echtra Games. “Torchlight Frontiers will be a living, breathing universe that will still feel uniquely Torchlight, while we add our own creative spin to the game. The team is building something truly special, and we can’t wait for fans to play it for the first time at Gamescom and PAX West.”
So what’s so new?
Well, as Schaefer explained, Frontiers is a shared world for gamers to play around in. Players will be able to team up with friends (and yes, CPU-controlled pets) to explore the Torchlight universe. The company is also saying that that universe will be a world that’s both procedurally generated and scripted.
Again too, if you’re going to Gamescom or PAX West, you’ll be able to be among the first to actually get some hands on time with it. The team will be in Hall 8, at Booth#B41 at Gamescom, from August 21 – 25. As for PAX West, they’ll be at Booth #1115 from August 31 through September 3.
