Dark Horse and HappyGiant Games team up to bring the famed comic ronin back to video games after 25 years.
I honestly don’t remember the Usagi game from a quarter century ago (wow that sounds like a long time when I put it like that), but I very much remember the character and the comics. I used to read Usagi right along with TMNT as a standard part of my comic book diet for years.
Now the not-so-cuddly rabbit with the katana is on iOS devices and will soon be arriving on PC’s and Android handhelds. For the game’s creators HappyGiant, porting the masterless samurai into the world of gaming was a feat they were all too eager for:
“Happy Giant is thrilled to be working with (creator -ed) Stan Sakai and Dark Horse to bring Usagi Yojimbo to the mobile and gaming worlds”, said Michael Levine, CEO of HappyGiant. “This is one of the most treasured properties in the comics world, and we are proud to be adapting it as a game for fans, and for a new generation of fans who will discover it for the first time. This is a real labor of love.”
The title Usagi Yojimbo: Way of the Ronin is intentionally crafted to be a throwback to the days of TMNT The Arcade Game and the like. It includes 60 different enemies, 13 boss battles, and a slew of cameo’s of Usagi comic book mainstays to fight alongside.
There are no details just yet on when we might expect the PC and Android versions of the game, but the iPad/iPhone edition is available now.
